د. خالد بن غازي الدلبحي
أستاذ التربية الخاصة المشارك
قسم التربية الخاصة - كلية التربية بالدوادمي - جامعة شقراء
This study aimed at
identifying the relationship between inappropriate parenting styles and
oppositional defiant disorder among children with mild intellectual disability.
It also sought to explore differences in oppositional defiant disorder among
children with mild intellectual disability according to gender. Differences in
inappropriate parenting styles according to some parental demographics (age –
educational level – family income) were also investigated. The sample consisted
of (208) subjects assigned as follows: 52 male and 52 female children with mild
intellectual disability between (8 - 14) years of age. Their IQ ranged between
(53) and (73), 52 fathers and mothers of children with mild intellectual
disability between (35 - 64) years of age and 52 mothers of children with mild
intellectual disability between (35 - 60) years of age. Tools of the study
were: The scale of inappropriate parenting styles for parents of children with
mild intellectual disability (prepared by the researcher) and the scale of
oppositional defiant disorder for children with mild intellectual disability
(prepared by the researcher). Results indicated that there were a significant
positive relationship (a= 0.01) between scores on both scales of inappropriate
parenting styles and oppositional defiant disorder. Neglectful parenting was
the most common style among parents of children with mild intellectual
disability. There were significant differences (a= 0.01) between male and
female children with mild intellectual disability on the oppositional defiant
disorder scale, in favor of the males. There were significant differences (a=
0.01) between fathers and mothers of children with mild intellectual disability
on the inappropriate parenting styles scale, in favor of the fathers. Level of
oppositional defiant disorder among children with mild intellectual disability
could be predicted through the inappropriate parenting styles. There were
statistically significant differences in these inappropriate parenting styles,
in favor of those of (35 and less than 50) years of age). There were statistically significant
differences in favor of those of master degree. There were statistically
significant differences (a= 0.01) between the targeted three educational levels
(master – bachelor – secondary or lower level of education), in favor of those
of secondary or lower level of education. There were also statistically
significant differences (a= 0.01) in favor of those of incomes between (5000 –
less than 15000 SR.(
Keywords: inappropriate parenting styles - oppositional defiant disorder - children with mild intellectual disability.
