Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of intermediate stage science teachers regarding the technology of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in the educational process and their relationship with certain variables. The descriptive survey method was employed, and the research instrument consisted of a questionnaire covering five domains. The questionnaire included 55 items and was administered to a randomly selected sample of (82) male and female science teachers in the city of Arar during the first semester of the academic year 1447 AH. The results indicated that teachers’ perceptions of Gen AI applications in intermediate stage science education were highly evident across all questionnaire domains. The domain of challenges associated with implementing Gen AI ranked first, with a mean 3.82. This was followed by the domain of educational applications of Gen AI in science education, which ranked second with a mean 3.68. The knowledge of Gen AI applications domain ranked third with a mean 3.68. In fourth place was the domain of implementation requirements, with a mean of 3.64. Finally, the domain of attitudes toward the use of generative AI in education ranked fifth and last, with a mean 3.61. Moreover, a statistically significant difference was found in teachers’ perceptions according to the academic qualification variable (bachelor’s, postgraduate) in favor of postgraduate teachers, whereas no statistically significant differences were found according to gender, years of experience. The study recommended developing practice-oriented training programs for science teachers in the field of Gen AI, establishing robust frameworks and tools to assess its educational impact, and strengthening digital infrastructure and supportive policies.
