The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital in the Relationship Between Occupational Stress and Mental Health Among School Principals and Vice-Principals in Yanbu Governorate

هدفت الدارسة الحالية إلى الكشف عن مستويات الضغوط المهنية، ورأس المال النفسي، والصحة النفسية، وتقصي الدور الوسيط لرأس المال النفسي في العلاقة بين الضغوط المهنية والصحة النفسية لدى مديرات المدارس ووكيلاتها بإدارة التعليم بمحافظة ينبع. اتبع البحث المنهج الوصفي الارتباطي، واختيرت عينة عشوائية طبقية مكونة من (82) مديرة، و (104) وكيلة في المراحل التعليمية الثلاثة (ابتدائية، متوسطة، وثانوية). طُبقت مقاييس: الصحة العامة لــــ "جولدبيرج" و "ويليمز" (Golderberg & Williams, 1988) والضغوط المهنية لـــ "الفيز" وزملائه (Alves et al., 2004)، ورأس المال النفسي لــــ "لوثنز" وزملائه (Luthans et al, 2006). وأسفرت النتائج عن مستويات متوسطة من الضغوط المهنية، إلى جانب ارتفاع مستويات كل من رأس المال النفسي والصحة النفسية لدى مديرات المدارس ووكيلاتها. كما أظهرت النتائج أن جميع مسارات النموذج البنائي كانت دالة إحصائيًا، إذ إن هناك أثرًا سالبًا مباشرًا بين الضغوط المهنية والصحة النفسية، وأثرًا سالبًا مباشرًا ما بين الضغوط المهنية ورأس المال النفسي، في حين كان الأثر المباشر موجبًا بين رأس المال النفسي والصحة النفسية. كما أن هناك دورًا وسيطًا لرأس المال النفسي في العلاقة بين الضغوط المهنية والصحة النفسية. وبناءً عليه، قدم البحث توصيات تهدف إلى تعزيز الصحة النفسية لدى القيادات التربوية، من خلال تطوير برامج لدعم رأس المال النفسي والحد من الضغوط المهنية في البيئة التعليمية.

Abstract

The current study aimed to examine the levels of occupational stress, psychological capital, and mental health, and to investigate the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between occupational stress and mental health among school principals and their vice-principals in the Education Department of Yanbu Governorate. The research adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a stratified random sample comprising 82 principals and 104 vice-principals from the three educational stages (primary, intermediate, and secondary). The study employed the following scales: the General Health Questionnaire by Goldberg and Williams (1988), the Occupational Stress Scale by Alves et al. (2004), and the Psychological Capital Scale by Luthans et al. (2006). The findings indicated moderate levels of occupational stress, alongside high levels of both psychological capital and mental health among school principals and their vice-principals. Additionally, all structural model paths were found to be statistically significant. Specifically, there was a direct negative effect of occupational stress on mental health, as well as a direct negative effect of occupational stress on psychological capital. Conversely, the direct effect of psychological capital on mental health was positive. Moreover, psychological capital was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between occupational stress and mental health.

Based on these findings, the study presented recommendations aimed at enhancing mental health among educational leaders by developing programs to support psychological capital and reduce occupational stress within the educational environment.
