Phonetic Error Analysis Among Non-Native Arabic Speakers: A Methodological Approach Based on Corder's Theory

Abstract

This study, entitled "An Analysis of Phonetic Errors among Non-Native Speakers of Arabic: A Methodological Approach Based on Corder’s Theory," aims to analyze the common phonetic errors made by students at the Institute for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers at the Islamic University of Madinah, and to identify the underlying causes of these errors. In addition, the study proposes several possible solutions that may help reduce the frequency of these errors. To achieve its objectives, the study employed Corder’s Error Analysis Method, which involves collecting data, classifying the errors, identifying their possible causes, evaluating them, and finally proposing appropriate solutions to minimize them. The results revealed that the students’ errors fell into four main categories: substitution, insertion, deletion, and disordering. Among these, substitution errors were the most prevalent, accounting for 96% of all recorded errors. The study also has shown that guttural, lingual, and emphatic sounds were among the most challenging for students. This was attributed to two main factors: linguistic interference between learner's native language and Arabic, and interference within the phonological system of Arabic language itself. 

Based on these findings, the study has provided several recommendations, including developing educational strategies to assist students in acquiring Arabic sounds, such as enhancing regular phonetic training through focused exercises based on guided simulation and repetition. It also has emphasized providing interactive training in various phonetic contexts, utilizing minimal pairs, and organizing Arabic sounds into groups based on their articulation points and characteristics when introducing them to students, alongside detailed descriptions of their pronunciation mechanisms. Furthermore, the study has highlighted the importance of leveraging modern technologies to teach Arabic sounds and deliver phonetic training. Additionally, it stressed the importance of training and developing teachers' skills of teaching Arabic sounds.
