Using Digital Dictionaries in Learning Arabic as a Second Language: (Attitudes, Challenges, Influencing Factors, Skills)

The Institute of Arabic Language for Non-Native Speakers at the Islamic University as a Case Study

Abstract:

The current study aimed to identify the point of view of learners of Arabic as a second language toward the use of digital dictionaries and to explore the key challenges and factors influencing their use in learning Arabic as a second language. The research employed a de-scriptive-analytical approach, with the study population comprising all learners of Arabic as a second language at the Institute of Arabic Lan-guage, Islamic University of Madinah. A random sample of 742 partic-ipants was selected to complete a questionnaire and an attitude scale to collect data. The key findings were as follows: The general point of view of the sample toward using digital dictionaries in learning Arabic as a second language was ranked as "high", with an overall mean score of 3.42. The general attitude toward the challenges of using digital dictionaries was ranked as "moderate," with a mean score of 3.37, and the overall attitude toward the factors influencing the use of digital dictionaries in learning Arabic as a second language was ranked as "high" with an overall mean score of 4. Additionally, the general the point of view of the sample regarding the most prominent skills that digital dictionaries develop in Arabic as a second language was ranked as "high" with a mean score of 3.9. The results also showed no statisti-cally significant differences at the significance level (? ? 0.05) in the responses of the research sample regarding the point of view of the learners of Arabic as a second language toward using digital dictionar-ies at the Institute of Arabic Language, Islamic University of Madi-nah, based on language level, nationality, age, and method of use. Based on these findings, the study recommended leveraging the posi-tive the point of view of learners of Arabic as a second language to-ward using digital dictionaries in learning Arabic and the need to work on addressing the factors affecting the use of digital dictionaries.
