The Symbolic Discourse in the Short Story Collection “Ma??rij al-Baw?” by ??le? A?mad al-Suhaim?

A Stylistic and Analytical Reading

Abstract

This reading traces the symbolic discourse in the collection Ma??rij al-Baw?: Very Short Stories by the writer ??li? bin A?mad al-Suhaym?. It explores the most prominent manifestations of symbolic discourse through several sections, preceded by an introduction and a prelude. The introduction addresses the concept of the reading itself, the motivations for uncovering the symbolic discourse in the collection, its questions, and its objectives. In the preface, the reading examines the concept of symbolic discourse and provides an introduction to the author. The first chapter explores place and its symbolic dimensions; the second chapter uncovers color and symbolic structure; while the third chapter addresses the discourse of language and symbolic imagery. The main findings of the reading are presented in the conclusion. This reading is grounded in the dialectical relationship and tension between the actual and the possible, which emerges as a central theme manifesting in various forms and patterns throughout the collection. It examines the self’s struggle in the face of these transformations and its deep exploration. Place assumes a distinct presence in the symbolic discourse, generating meaning, while the structure of colors reinforces the symbolic horizons that emerge from the dialectic between the self as it is and as it could be. This dynamic is also reflected in the discourse of language and imagery. The reading also highlights the dominant role of the collection’s threshold—Ma??rij al-Baw?—its conscious deployment and functional presence within the narrative structure.
