A Study and Investigation of the Book Khulasat al-Zubdah wa-Zubdat al-Umdah by Imam Muhadhab al-Din Ahmad bin ?Abd al-Ri?a al-Basri

Abstract

This research studied and investigated an authentic rhetorical book entitled: "Khulasat al-Zubdah wa-Zubdat al-Umdah", which is still an unpublished manuscript, having only one unique copy, written in a clear and beautiful Naskh script. What encouraged and pushed me towards editing and investigating the book is that its author, Imam Muhadhab al-Din Ahmad bin Abd al-Ri?a al-Basri, is one of the scholars of the eleventh century AH. He is a genius in diverse fields of knowledge, and skilled in multiple sciences, such as Islamic jurisprudence and its principles, Qur'an exegesis and hadith, rhetoric and medicine. He intersects in coalition with Imam Abdul-Qahir, al-Sakaki and al-Qazwini, having benefited from them in theory and application, preference and selection, and his dispensing with rhetorical difference of opinions among scholars. Studying and investigating this book is of great importance as it serves the rhetorical library of Islamic heritage, highlights the book for researchers; to motivate them to explain and comment on it, in addition to deduction of rules and its preservation. The book is distinguished by the sequence of rhetorical terms, brevity of phrases, mastery of terms and their definitions, ending of sections with a unique and logical mind, and the efficient transition from one meaning to another. The book is a basic mainstay among other concise books and summaries, which necessitates the importance of studying and investigating it. 

The research is divided into an introduction and two chapters. The first chapter was devoted to studying the author, his life and scientific works, and studying the book, its scientific value and its sources and references, adopting the descriptive and historical methods. The other chapter included the investigative edition of the book according to the rules of chief investigative editors in this art. However, the researcher did not fail to comment on some issues, and he concluded the book with an appendix of its sources and valuable references.
