Allegations of the Deficiency of the Arabic Language between Folk Linguistics and Linguistics

(A critical Analytical Study of the Concept of Linguistic Perfection)

الملخص

تهدفُ هذه الدراسة إلى الوقوف على مزاعم القول بـ(قصور العربية)، وهو حكم نقدي قد انبنى عليه ادّعاء بصرامة بنيتها وصعوبتها وعدم نضجها. وخطة البحث تقتضي مبدئيًّا تشكيل تصوّر نظريّ دقيق عن مفهوم (الكمال اللغوي) المُقتضي لمفهوم (القصور) أو (النقص)، فهما مفهومان عامّان يقترنان بتصوّرات غامضة وفضفاضة عن تقييم اللغات وتفضيل بعضها على بعض، ولذلك بُنيت عليهما تصورات وهمية مرتبطة بأحكام نقدية مقولبة ومختصرة. فغالبًا ما وَجدتْ تلك التصورات مداخل لها في أشهر المنعطفات التاريخية للدرس اللساني الغربي. وهو ما جعل تتبُّع مفهوم الكمال اللغوي يسلك بتسلسله الزمني مسالك متعددة يُمكن إجمالها في جوانب أربعة على النحو الآتي: الجانب الفكري، والجانب الشكلي، والجانب النظامي، والجانب الشعبي. واللغة العربية، وإن كانت هي المعنية هنا بدرجة أولى، إلا أنها لا تُمثِّل حالة خاصة للمسألة، فهناك لغات كثيرة لا تزال عُرضة للانتقاد والاتهام بالنقص. ومسألة النقد اللغوي برمّتها لا تزال مُشبعة بقدر كبير من الآراء والمعتقدات الشعبية غير المتخصصة.

Abstract

This study aims at examining the allegations of the “deficiency of Arabic language”, an allegation has been made of its rigid structure, difficulty, and immaturity. The research plan, initially, requires the formation of an accurate theoretical conception of the (linguistic perfection) term which requires the concept of (deficiency) or (imperfection), as they are two general concepts associated with ambiguous and loose visualizations about evaluating languages and preferring one over others. Therefore, illusionary visualizations linked to stereotyped and brief critical judgments were built upon them. These visualizations often found their entry points in the most famous historical turning points in the Western linguistic study. This is what made tracing the concept of linguistic perfection follows multiple paths in its chronological sequence that can be summed up in four aspects as follows: the intellectual aspect, the formal aspect, the systematic aspect, and the popular aspect. The Arabic language, although it is primarily concerned here, does not represent a special case of the issue, as there are many languages that are still subject to criticism and accusation of deficiency. The entire issue of linguistic criticism is still full of a large amount of popular, non-specialized opinions and beliefs.
