A Critical Study of Coffee and Café in Mahmoud 

Darwish's Poetry in Light of Communication Theory

الملخص

يُعد محمود درويش واحدًا من أبرز شعراء العربيّة المعاصرين؛ إذ مرّت تجربته الشعريّة بتحولات كبرى، جعلت منها مادةً أدبيّةً ثريّة للدراسات النقديّة في جوانب عدة. وقد شكّلت القهوة والمقهى إحدى العلامات المهيمنة في شعر محمود درويش، فكان هذا البحث؛ لتناولهما وفق نظرية الاتصال اللغويّة للكشف عن عناصر الاتصال في بنيتها الشعرية، وأبرز السياقات التي أسهمت في رؤية الشاعر التكوينية، وفي البنى النصيّة لنصوصه، وأهم الوظائف اللغويّة التي تضمّنتها، ومدى قدرة الشاعر على صناعة نصوص شعريّة للقهوة والمقهى ذات كفاية اتصاليّة عالية. وقد توصّل البحث إلى عددٍ من النتائج، أبرزها: تعدد السياقات غير اللغوية المؤثرة في بنية القهوة والمقهى في شعر الشاعر، وأنهما ذواتا بُعدٍ دلالي واسع تجاوز المعنى المعجمي إلى الآخر الشعري، وأنَّ درجة الاتصال بين الشاعر والمتلقين في نصوص القهوة والمقهى عالية، تجلّت في نمطين من التلقي: المباشر، وغير المباشر.

Abstract

Mahmoud Darwish is one of the most prominent contemporary Arab poets. His poetic experience has gone through major transformations, which makes it the target for many critical studies in various aspects. Coffee and café have formed one of the dominant symbols in Darwish's poetry. Therefore, this research aims to discuss the representation of coffee and café according to the communication theory to identify the elements of communication in its poetic structure, the most significant contexts that contributed to the poet's formative vision, the textual structures of his texts, the key linguistic functions they encompassed, and the poet's ability to create highly communicative efficient poetic texts about coffee and the café. Using the analytical approach and communication theory, the study revealed some findings. The multiplicity of non-linguistic contexts influenced the structure of coffee and café in Darwish's work. Furthermore, the study indicated that coffee and café shared wide semantic dimension that transcends the lexicographical meaning to the poetic meaning. Finally, the analysis showed a high level of communication between the poet and the audience in the verses about coffee and café, manifested in direct and indirect reception.
