The Semiotic of the Compound Title in the Novel “Fire Insomnia and Water Anxiety, Story of a Woman and Half” by Saleh bin Ramadan

يندرج هذا البحث ضمن البحوث المعنية بتأويل العتبات النصية تأويلا سيميائيا، ويُعنى بدراسة ظاهرة ثنائية العنوان أو العنوان المركب في رواية "أرق النار وقلق الماء – حكاية مرا ونصف" لصالح بن رمضان، ويبحث في العلاقة بين العنوانين من حيث الافتراق والاتفاق ومن حيث الدلالة السيميائية لهذا النوع من العنونة، ودوره في صنع الوعي بالخطاب المنتج، وبناء أفق انتظار يلائم هذه الثنائية الدلالية، ويستوعب هذا النوع من السرد. وينظر البحث إلى العلاقة الدلالية بين العنوان وبقية العتبات، وطرائق تشكل دلالاته الخاصة والعامة في النص ضمن أنساق انزياحية وثقافية امتدت من العنوان إلى النص كاملا.

وخلص البحث إلى مجموعة من النتائج، أهمها: إنّ هذا النوع من العنونة يخاطب متلقيين يشمل أحدهما الآخر ويفترق عنه في الوقت ذاته، ويخضع – بهذه الهيئة- للسياق الميتالغوي، ويوظّف التشكل البصري للغلاف والجمل الثقافية لصنع الدلالات السيميائية التي تتغلغل في النص الروائي، وتشكّل البناء السردي.

Abstract

This research falls within the research concerned with interpreting textual thresholds semiotically, and is concerned with studying the phenomenon of the dual title or the compound title in the novel “The Insomnia of Fire and the Anxiety of Water - Story of a Woman and Half” by Saleh Ben Ramadan. It examines the relationship between the two titles in terms of difference and agreement and in terms of the semiotic significance of this type of title, and its role in creating awareness of the productive discourse, and establishing spatial structure that fits this semantic duality and accommodates this type of narrative. The research looks at the semantic relationship between the title and the rest of the thresholds, and the ways in which its specific and general connotations are formed in the text within shifting and cultural patterns that extend from the title to the entire text.

The research yielded several findings, the most important of which are:  this type of title addresses two recipients; one of which includes the other, and disagrees with the other at the same time, and is subject - in this form - to the metalinguistic context, and the visual form of the cover and cultural sentences are used to create the semiotic connotations that permeate the narrative text and form the narrative structure.
