Manifestations of Linguistic Bigotry Against the Arabic Language in Western Research Circles

تهدف هذه الدِّراسة إلى رصد مظاهر التعصب اللساني ضد اللغة العربية في دوائر البحث الغربية، ولا تدّعي أنها ستقف على كل مظاهر التعصب هذه، فحسبها أن تُحيط بجزئية منها، وبالذات تلك المتعلقة بالأثر المتبادل بين بنية اللغة العربية والبنية العقلية للناطقين بها، وما نتج عنها من مزاعم وانطباعات ذاتية. وقد جاءت مظاهر التعصب المحددة بهذا الإطار في ثلاث دعاوى أساسية، هي: أولًا: القصور العقلي، وثانيًا: عدم القدرة على التفكير الصادق والحقيقي، وثالثًا: اللعب الكلامي. فالادّعاء الأول والثاني يتعلقان بالأثر السالب لبنية اللغة العربية في البنية العقلية للناطقين بها، وأما الادّعاء الثالث فيتعلّق بالأثر السالب للبنية العقلية في بنية اللغة العربية. وقد اتّخذت الدراسة من المنهج الوصفي التحليلي أداة لتفحّص تلك المزاعم وبيّنت أسبابها وفرضياتها، وانتهت إلى أنها لا تستند في معظمها إلى أي أُسس سليمة، وإنما هي انطباعات ذاتية، لا قيمة لها في ميزان العلم. وهي بذلك تُشكِّل استثناءً صارخًا في مسيرة حديثة لحقل معرفي يَغُذُّ الخطى ليلحق بركب (العلمية). واللسانيات اليوم، وإن كانت تدّعي الظفر بالسِّمة: (العلمية)، كما أراد لها رائدها (فردينان دي سوسير) قبل مائة عام أو يزيد، فإنها، في الحقيقة، يعتريها بعض الأباطيل والخُرافات، وهي بذلك ليست موضوعية تمامًا، وليس أدلّ على ذلك من ظاهرة التعصب اللساني التي تشي بتضمُّن اللسانيات لكثير من النظرات الشعبية. وبذلك فإن اللسانيات المعاصرة، من الناحية الموضوعية، ليست بريئة تمامًا سواء في مجرياتها أم منطلقاتها.

 Abstract:

This study aims to monitor the manifestations of linguistic bigotry against the Arabic language in Western research circles, and it does not claim that it will discuss every manifestation of this bigotry, as it is sufficient to cite some of them, especially those related to the mutual impact between the structure of the Arabic language and the mental structure of its speakers, and the resulting subjective claims and impressions. The specific manifestations of bigotry in this framework came in three basic claims: First: mental deficiency, secondly: the inability to think honestly and truly, and thirdly: verbal play. The first and second claims relate to the negative impact of the structure of the Arabic language on the mental structure of its speakers, and the third claim relates to the negative impact of the mental structure on the structure of the Arabic language. The study took the analytical descriptive method as a tool to examine these allegations and showed their reasons and hypotheses, and concluded that they are not based in most of them on any sound foundations, but rather they are subjective impressions, which have no value in the balance of scholarship. It thus constitutes a glaring exception in the modern march of a field of knowledge that is feeding the pace to catch up with (scholarly). Linguistics today, even if it claims to have the achieved: (scholarly), as its pioneer (Ferdinand de Saussure) intended for it a hundred or more years ago, it is, in fact, riddled with some falsehoods and myths, and thus it is not completely objective, and the best evidence for that is the phenomenon of linguistic bigotry, which indicates that linguistics includes many popular views. Thus, contemporary linguistics, in some respects, is not completely innocent, either in its processes or its sources.
